02 Dec Bali shower epiphany
In my magic outdoor shower here in Ubud, Bali, I had an epiphany this morning.
“As soon as I realised that I am nothing, I knew that I didn’t have to be anything. Without any self-imposed expectations or judgments of who I have to be, I am free to be who I am, free to flow with what is—without fitting into any shapes or forms.”
From a very young age we learn to strive to become someone according to social, cultural and family expectations. That someone then loses its sense of self, its sense that we are so much more than just fitting into one square, rectangular or circular shape; we are everything, without a limited form. When we walk our own way to freedom we cease having to fit into the robes of a monk, a nun or any other discipline, profession or work—be it following a spiritual tradition, psychology, or becoming lost in the clique of a new-age spiritual community.
Whatever it is, a lot is to be said to just be a farmer herding the sheep—an almost lost tradition that symbolizes the disgrace of humanity that is slowly losing its heart and its connection to nature to the modern ethos of greed—to have more and more. No wonder our society is suffering from depression and making billions from pharmacological companies. It’s both a tragedy for humanity and a lesson for everyone who has the courage to find faith and trust in their own journey to the heart of nature’s pure essence.
And please don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with ‘fitting’ into a form. It is important to accept that there are many forms and shapes, and to discover for ourselves the ones that do or do not fit our true essence. And for those who do not find one, keep walking! The path to freedom lies in the heart of true nature, in the moment-to-moment awareness of walking.
In my book, Walking Into It: A Pilgrimage through Foreign Lands to Inner Worlds, (to be released in early 2015), I share the beginning of my journey of the heart. Sharing my inner world has been the most challenging calling and the toughest mountain to climb. I hope that my story will give people the faith and courage to walk and trust their intuition even more deeply every step along the way—so we can all connect to the essence of our heart. Only then are we free. Only then do we become nature’s breathing art, beings who naturally and constantly change form and shape—without trying to ‘fit’ into anything. But if in the end we do, it’s fine! And if we don’t, that’s fine too. We breathe, the air of who we are.
Walking into it, we discover spontaneously what our true nature is looking for. That’s freedom to just be—that’s the breath of who we are.
